BERKLEYTOWN HERITAGE PARK

Lively Harper worked with the Town of Ashland, Virginia to design and fabricate six signs, each with a custom-painted mural describing different facets of life in this historic neighborhood.

The park was designed in conjunction with the Berkleytown Heritage Project, a collaborative storytelling project of the Town of Ashland, Virginia, Hanover County Black Heritage Society, and Randolph-Macon College.

Situated on land donated by Habitat for Humanity, the park honors the rich history of the Berkleytown neighborhood, a historically African American community established in the early 20th century during the era of segregation. Recognized for its cultural importance, Berkleytown was officially listed on both the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places in 2022.
